ANTIQUE DECOY BIRDS

What are antique decoy birds????

Clients fall in love with antique decoys once they have one in their home.

Sometimes the collecting habit can get out of control, not mentioning Miles who at one time had more than 40!!!

But what are they? what were they used for? How old are they?

Well, the word decoy means to trap or cage. They were made to lure other birds near to them to be shot or trapped.

They range from large birds such as swans, but these are very rare, to smaller birds such as pigeons and ducks like this late 19th century example below.

The earliest known  wooden decoys are from America and date from around 1720.

Here is another, larger antique decoy duck we have available : www.milesgriffithsantiques.co.uk/products/32B416E9171C483585849EF988EA8B51.asp
